Lesson objective: Writing decimal, fraction and word form with models.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with writing decimals, fractions, and the word form associated with them. Models such as base ten flats and number lines are used here because they support conceptual growth into what decimals and fractions represent. This work develops students' understanding that decimal notation is based on denominators that are powers of 10.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they first look at what a fraction or decimal looks like using base ten flats, how to represent fractions and decimals, as well as how to write them in word form.
