“Why is Charlie excited to beat Algernon?”	Charlie is excited to beat Algernon because it signals that Charlie is becoming smarter. He wasn’t able to beat Algernon prior to and right after the surgery. He learned that Algernon also received the surgery, which Charlie believes is why Algernon was able to beat him. When Charlie beats Algernon, Charlie finally realizes he must be getting smarter, even though he says he doesn’t feel smarter. 2. “Why is it important that the effects of Algernon’s surgery have lasted so long?”	The doctors warn Charlie prior to the surgery that it might not be permanent. Algernon had the surgery before Charlie, so the doctors and Charlie are optimistic that the results from the surgery might be permanent. 3. “What do Charlie and Robinson Crusoe have in common? Why?”	Charlie says that Robinson Crusoe is a man that gets marooned on a deserted island. He is smart and figures out things so he can survive. Charlie also says he feels sorry for Crusoe because he is alone and has no friends. Since Charlie had the surgery, he is kind of like a man on a deserted island because he is the first and only person to have had the surgery. He is learning all kinds of new things every day, like Crusoe who figures things out. Charlie also starts to learn that the guys he thought were his friends aren’t, which makes him lonely. 4. “What happens when Charlie goes out with Joe and Frank on April 19? How is this experience different from previous experiences with Joe and Frank?”	Charlie goes to a party with Joe and Frank. Joe and Frank get Charlie drunk and then have him dance with a girl while they trip him and make him fall down to laugh at him. For the first time, Charlie understands how his “friends” are treating him. He ends up feeling ashamed and decides to stay home from work the next day. That is the first time he has missed work. 5. “Why does Charlie say he ‘felt naked’?”	It is a way to say you are embarrassed. If you were to be naked in front of a bunch of people, it would be embarrassing, so Charlie is embarrassed that he never realized his “friends” asked him to come out with them so they could make fun of him. 6. “How has Charlie changed Progress Report 9? How do you know? What do the entries from April 14 and April 20 reveal?”	Charlie is starting to understand and question things around him. Instead of accepting what Miss Kinnian says about Robinson Crusoe, Charlie asks, “Why?” Instead of just going along with the “prank” at the party, Charlie is aware of what is happening around him. He is able to think about other people’s perspectives and look in on himself in a way that he wasn’t able to do before. For example, when he was asked to explain what he saw in the inkblots and make up stories about the pictures in the TAT at beginning of the story, he couldn’t do it and thought it was lying. Now Charlie is able to draw conclusions and think about things that are abstract and not concrete. 7. “What do Charlie’s experiences reveal about gaining knowledge?”	Charlie’s experiences reveal that gaining knowledge isn’t always positive. Sometimes when you learn more about people, you learn that they are bad. Also, as Charlie learns that his “friends” are making fun of him, it makes him sick and feel badly. He is ashamed. Those complex feelings come as he gains knowledge. He also realizes that as he gains knowledge he learns more about what he doesn’t know, such as the example with Robinson Crusoe. He wants to know more, but there isn’t more to learn, which isn’t very satisfying to Charlie.
